Step 1: Expected Users and Initial List of Tasks
Expected Users
There are hundreds of fliers that advertise private tutors, posted on just about every bulletin board in every building on the UMCP campus. So, naturally, several tutors that had posted such fliers around campus were interviewed. Additionally, a survey was given to students and tutors (or anyone who had previously been a student or tutor). This group of students and tutors served as a good representation of possible clients, even if they had not studied or tutored specifically at UMCP.
The survey can be viewed here:
User Need Survey
Initial Tasks
  • Students can post public feedback on specific tutors, through written reviews and ratings based on quality, price, availability, approachability, etc.
  • Students can search for tutors or tutoring services affiliated with UMCP by academic subject, price, time available, ratings, size of tutoring sessions/groups, etc.
  • Students can request appointments with tutors
  • Private tutors and tutoring services affiliated with UMCP and private tutors can post contact information, resumes, schedules, whether or not appointments are required to be scheduled in advance, and other information about themselves
  • Tutors have access to a private calendar, where they can view and schedule tutoring sessions with students
  • Online tutoring sessions for students

Step 2: Validation of Tasks
Upon interviewing several tutors, it was brought to our attention that it would be helpful if there were some mechanism to show where and how far they are willing to travel to meet with potential students in person. Moreover, the location at which private tutors are comfortable conducting their sessions needs to be indicated (e.g. Some private tutors may wish to meet on campus, rather than in a client’s home). The results collected from the survey also aided us in revising our list of tasks. The majority of responses from students indicated that a tutor’s experience, price, and availability were the most important factors when determining what tutor to choose. Furthermore, most seemed to think that tutor ratings and the ability to schedule appointments with tutors were useful features for the website.

Revised List of Tasks
  • Students can anonymously post public feedback on specific tutors, through written reviews and ratings based on quality, price, availability, approachability, etc. for each subject (or course, if applicable) that the tutor teaches
  • Students can edit their own posts and reviews of tutors
  • Students can browse tutors or tutoring services affiliated with UMCP according to academic subject (or course), price, time available, ratings, size of tutoring sessions/groups, etc.
  • Students can search for specific tutors by name
  • Students can request and schedule appointments with tutors
  • Private tutors and tutoring services affiliated with UMCP can post contact information, resumes, schedules, whether or not appointments are required to be scheduled in advance, teaching styles, whether they prefer to teach students one-on-one or within a group, and other pertinent information about themselves, which can be viewed publicly by users in a designated profile page
  • Tutors who have posted profile pages are able to modify their own profile
  • Tutors can post the location(s) where they are willing to travel to conduct tutoring sessions
  • Tutors can specify both subject and classes (corresponding to courses offered at UMCP) that they teach
  • Tutors have access to a private calendar, where they can view, modify, and add tutoring sessions that they have scheduled with students
  • Users can browse the reviews and ratings of tutors that have been posted
  • Online tutoring sessions conducted through the website

Step 3: Key Users and Tentative List of Requirements
Obviously, the users that we must address are UMCP students and the tutors willing to work with those students. Below is another revision of our tasks list, ranking tasks from highest to lowest priority.

Highest Priority Tasks
  • Students can anonymously post public feedback on specific tutors, through written reviews and ratings based on quality, price, availability, approachability, etc. for each subject (or course, if applicable) that the tutor teaches

  • Sudents can request and schedule appointments with tutors
  • Students can browse tutors or tutoring services affiliated with UMCP according to academic subject (or course), price, time available, ratings, size of tutoring sessions/groups, etc. Results of searches will allow users to navigate to tutors’ profile pages.
  • Students can search for specific tutors by name in addition to filtering options mentioned above
  • Tutors can post the location(s) where they are willing to travel to conduct tutoring sessions. They should be able to indicate this through text and may additionally highlight areas on a map, which can also be viewed by other users
